old friend. Lincoln explains, "Mr. ThomasAlsop
is my personal acquaintance of near twenty years standing, and one of the
truest men I ever knew. He is needy now; and if you can at once, or in a
reasonable time, find a clerkship for him, I shall be greatly obliged to you."
