spends part of the day attending military functions. A newspaper reports, "The
Pennsylvania 4th [Regiment] came in from camp this afternoon, and marched up
to the White House, where they were reviewed by the President." Another paper
reports that Lincoln and the Secretary of War Simon Cameron look on as General
Irvin McDowell's wife Helen "and one or two other ladies," donate cloths
fashioned to provide sun protection to the soldiers of "Companies I, B and G,
[with the] Second Cavalry." New York Daily Tribune, 18
