Correspondent of Illinois State Register, writing from Monticello
July 29, 1858, reports: "It was expected that he [Lincoln] would
remain here for a day or two, or follow Senator Douglas to Paris, but
he left suddenly on the midnight train for Springfield." (By
"midnight train" Great Western, which Lincoln would have taken at
Bement, is indicated.)
