William H. Bissell, first Republican governor of Illinois, is
inaugurated. Evening celebration is held. Gustave Koerner makes first
speech. Lincoln is among those who follow him. "The speeches were all
characterized by great good feeling, and the enthusiasm of the
audience often vented itself in rounds of applause."
