[Illinois Journal reports rumored resignation of Justin Butterfield
as commissioner of General Land Office. "Abraham Lincoln, who was
defeated . . . by, as we think, the withholding of certain papers in
his behalf,—will not now from the peculiar state of his private
affairs, accept the office, even if it should be offered to him. . .
. But Mr. Lincoln will most cheerfully and heartily sustain Hon.
Cyrus Edward for the appointment."]
